Fine copies of the dustwrapper are difficult to locate due to the lamination and curling. This sensational bestseller was followed in quick succession by Wouk's own adaptation of the court-room section of the narrative for the stage (The Caine Mutiny Court Marshall, 1954), and then the Hollywood adaptation The Caine Mutiny (Columbia Pictures, 1954). with four double-page color illustrations in text by Lawrence Beall Smith, who also did the dustwrapper illustration, and the facsimile correspondence between Wouk and the Doubleday sales manager regarding the edition before the title page.

This copy is in near fine condition with only light rubbing to the edges and mild soiling to the text block, else fine housed in a clean and bright good or better dust jacket that shows moderate rubbing and chipping to the panel ends and edges, especially along the top of the back panel, and a couple of tears to the back panel that have had some minor tape repair done on the inside of the jacket. A unique item for the Wouk fan relatively scarce in the marketplace in collectible condition. This illustrated edition was published in the year after the first edition this edition was sent out to booksellers by Doubleday as a Christmas present included are correspondence between Wouk and Doubleday and a promotional card laid in that also went to the booksellers. The two letters appear to be copies printed from the originals as they are on the same cover stock with the main text of the letters being typewritten but both of the letters have none of the indenting from a typewriter one can usually feel by running the fingers over the text. The two letters are tipped in the book, not bound. The second letter is from Wouk expressing his thanks and willingness to supply signed copies, of which this book appears to be one. The first letter is from Fred Murray, sales manager of Doublday, addressed to Herman Wouk asking for signed copies of the Illustrated edition to be given to Doubleday bookstore managers and sales reps for their work in helping sell Wouks book. Interesting associational copy as two letters are tipped into the book after the page with the signature.
